Jill Finley Trunk Show (part 2)

We promised we'd show you more of the quilts from the ever-so-talented Jill Finley! So today we thought we'd show you her fabulous ideas on "Row Quilts" that she has done in a "Round Robin" kind of style. Here is how it works...First, YOU create an initial row for your quilt. This is the row that sets the theme for the quilt. Then, you send it onto the next quilter who uses either your fabric or their fabric to add another row! It continues like this, going through about 5 or 6 different quilters, until finally you have a finished quilt! It’s a quilt that you'll be completely surprised with since you don't get to see what the other quilters are adding to it until it's finished!! Wow, I think you'd have to have some quilters that you REALLY trusted.

Here are some quilts that Jill and her Quilting Family have put together in their Round Robin quilting groups!

First this darling row of roosters...

row1.jpg

And now for the full quilt reveal!

row1-quilt.jpg

Next was a darling Christmas quilt that started out with an appliqued row of holly...

row2.jpg

Now... a beautiful finished Christmas Quilt!

row2-quilt.jpg

Each of these quilts had a unique story, but this next one was really fun! The original creator of the first row did some boxy mosaics, and she said she was VERY limited on fabric options since she lived in downtown Manhattan and there were NO quilt fabric shops around!

row3.jpg

It was an amazing reveal, and so fun to see what all the other quilters added to this quilt! One quilter took the original square mosaics and made them into flowers! So creative!

row3-quilt.jpg

This next quilt is so fun and bright. It was designed to be in a game room!

row4.jpg

The finished quilt is absolutely amazing!

Lastly, is this adorable flower row on black background (sorry pictures just don't do these justice and this one's coloring is a little off)...

Here is the finished quilt...

Now wouldn't you say Jill and her family are pretty talented ladies!? Once again, thank you Jill for sharing so many wonderful creations with us.

Jill Finley Visits Quilted Works

We were all truly in awe as we witnessed the trunk show of Jill Finley on Saturday at our first 2012 Block of the Month. Jill Finley of Jillily Studio was here and did two amazing trunk shows where she showed her quilts and projects. Jill has got to be one of the most creative ladies around. Even those of us who have been quilting for years felt completely small compared to this creative genius!

jill-finley-1.jpg

Jill had many of her family members with her. They were such great helpers and are also her quilting partners! Jill told us about all the fun Family Quilt Retreats that they have shared over the years. She had great ideas for group quilting projects. We'll share some of these great ideas with you over the next couple of weeks. Jill had so many great quilts and ideas that they can't all fit into one blog post...so we'll do a few posts!

jill-finley-3.jpg

Jill shared lots of fun stories about her quilting - past and present. She really had us laughing when she read some advice from a 1949 Singer Sewing Machine Manual...it was so funny that we just have to share it with you all...

Prepare yourself mentally for sewing. Think about what you are going to do. . . Never approach sewing with a sigh or lackadaisically. Good results are difficult when indifference predominates. Never try to sew with a sink full of dirty dishes or beds unmade. When there are urgent housekeeping chores, do these first so your mind is free to enjoy your sewing. . .When you sew, make yourself as attractive as possible. Put on a clean dress. Keep a little bag full of French chalk near your sewing machine to dust your fingers at intervals. Have your hair in order, powder and lipstick put on . . .[If] you are constantly fearful that a visitor will drop in or your husband will come home and you will not look neatly put together, you will not enjoy your sewing as you should. . .

Of course she then shared her advice ... "Put on your sweats, pull your hair back in a ponytail, grab a coaster for your diet coke, cover the dishes with a dish towel, and when it's time for dinner, order pizza!" Yeah, that sounds more like it!

jill-finley-4.jpg

We loved seeing the original quilt of our Block of the Month that Jill made. She shared many great ideas and tips about applique. She makes it look and sound so easy! She uses her own "Appli-Glue" for basting her appliques and swears by it! If you haven't tried it yet, you must! She has also invented these clever little sticky thimble dots that you place on your finger for hand sewing. Genius.

jill-finley-6.jpg

Jill had another quilt that was the same pattern as the quilt that we're making for our Block of the Month. It was so fun to see another color-way for the quilt.

jill-finley-2.jpg

After the trunk show, Jill was able to chat with the ladies individually and signed our books. Thank you Jill for coming to our shop! You are such an inspiration to us all.

Stay posted for many more great quilts that we'll be sharing from Jill's Trunk Show!
